Washing machine mistakes to avoid that are ‘detrimental’ and causes ‘smells’

Apr 25, 2024

Having a good laundry routine is the key to maintaining clothes that remain smelling effortlessly fresh after more than one wear.

Winging it when doing the laundry can not only be damaging to the clothes being washed but to the washing machine too.

Thankfully, Andrea Pesce, appliance expert at Domestic & General, has shared five common ways households may be causing damage that is “detrimental” to their washing machine.

He said: “Doing some very simple checks and following instructions can help reduce the damage to your washing machine.”

Leaving metal objects such as coins, keys, and screws could “damage the inner drum” of a washing machine. Other items such as chewing gum and tissues can “clog your washer drain”.

The “best way to stop this” is by checking the pockets of every item of clothing before putting them into the machine.

Leaving wet clothing in the washing machine for a prolonged period of time can “cause mould” to develop in the machine.

Andrea said: “This will lead to a smelly washing machine and also means your clothes won't be cleaned properly.”

To stop this from happening, and avoid the need to replace the machine, make sure to empty out freshly washed clothes as soon as the cycle has ended.

Cramming too much laundry into the appliance will only “backfire in the long run”, warned the expert.

This is because it stops clothes from being cleaned thoroughly, meaning households will have to re-wash their clothing putting a strain on the appliance.

Additionally, Andrea claimed that it can “damage the drum by denting it” and causing households to need a washing machine repair. The expert recommended that it’s best to fill the drum to around 80 percent.

How often, and how hard, households run their washing machine will determine their lifespan.

Andrea warned: “Putting your machine on too often and putting each load through additional spin and drain cycles will over time really impact the effectiveness of your machine.”

Instead, washing items on a cooler, shorter wash and sticking to only full loads “will prolong the life of your machine”.

When purchasing a new appliance, including a washing machine, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the care instructions that come with it.

This will allow households to know what detergent to use and any other important information about looking after the machine.
